The electric car is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. Not only among business drivers, because private individuals are also increasingly purchasing an electric car. This is evident from new figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics.
In 2020, the number of plug-in cars increased by 38 percent to a total of more than 273,000. The majority of them (174,000) are fully electrically powered. Plug-in hybrids are in the minority with about 99,300 units among cars with a plug. Incidentally, the BEV already overtook the PHEV in 2019. Dealers sold nearly 90,000 new all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids in 2020, 32 percent more than in the previous year. Almost a quarter of all newly registered cars were therefore plug-in cars.
According to the CBS, more and more private individuals are also purchasing an electric car. At the beginning of 2020, only 27 percent of all plug-in cars were owned by a private individual, but that rose to 36 percent in one year. Most cars with an electrically powered engine are still in business ownership.
Despite the increased popularity of electric cars and hybrids, the majority of the Dutch vehicle fleet still consists of fuel-driven cars. Plug-in cars accounted for only 3.1 percent of all passenger cars at the beginning of this year. At the beginning of this year, the Netherlands had a total of 8.8 million passenger cars.
