The Volkswagen ID3, Tesla Model 3 and Audi E-tron can all call themselves Electric Car of the Year for a year. They are the winners of the latest edition of this election, organized by the Vereniging Zakelijk Rijders, in collaboration with Eneco eMobility, LeasePlan and Techzle.
Previous editions of this election have always had only one winner, but because the range of electric cars has grown so much in 2020, the jury decided it would be fairer to make three categories. Everyone will understand that an electric Renault Twingo and a Porsche Taycan are difficult to categorize. And more categories will emerge in the future, because those who regularly read Techzle will see that the range is expanded almost every week with a new model.
No fewer than 23 brands, 32 models with 52 different versions were assessed on the basis of nine criteria. It is an election in which all electric cars that were on the market in 2020 participate. So not only newcomers like the Peugeot e-208, Mazda MX-30 and Honda E, but also old-timers like the Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf are on the jury’s longlist.
Stoneware
The Volkswagen ID3 has only been on the market since September, but almost 11,000 copies have already been registered. The driving characteristics score an 8 and combined with a WLTP range of 424 kilometers makes the ID.3 the winner in its class and the highest points of all cars. The Tesla Model 3 also won the title last year and shows that the model is still very good. An impressive range combined with the highest charging speed and no less than 9 out of 10 points for driveability confirm this. The Audi E-tron is the winner in the top segment on the basis of its range, good sales numbers and 1,800 kg towing weight.

Assessment criteria
Action radius, loading speed, availability, sales numbers, towing weight, price, ease of use, driving characteristics and lease rate are the elements that count in this election. The data of the nine criteria was then weighted by the jury. For example, the driving characteristics weigh more heavily in the judgment than the towing weight.
