Something very different
The English Caterham is also taking EV steps and announces the arrival of the Project V. With the Project V, the small manufacturer of mainly Spartan fun machines looks ahead to its first electric car. What seems? That will be something completely different from an electric Seven-like.
Caterham recently showed off the EV Seven. That was actually little more than a Seven in which Caterham had hung an electric motor and a large battery pack together with Swindon Powertrain. Caterham described the EV Seven as a development concept that explores how to build an electric car without compromising on a key Caterham pillar: low car weight. Caterham now reports that it will pull the curtain on the Project V on July 12. That promises to be a more concrete preview of the first electric Caterham that will go into production.
Where Caterhams have been – somewhat exaggerated – cigar-shaped and spartan open pieces of automotive indulgence with the front wheels outside the body for decades, the electric Caterham promises to be something completely different. We get to see the more common silhouette of a new model that seemingly has nothing to do with the Sevens at all. It seems to be a coupe, although the Project V could also get a removable targa roof.
According to Caterham, the Project V ‘captures the essence of an electric sports car’. At the presentation of the electric EV Seven, Caterham indicated that it would never make a model that weighs 1,000 kilograms or more. The first electric car from Caterham does indeed appear to be relatively light as a feather on the road.
