Indispensable for the EV driver: the Shell Recharge App with which you can go to more than 300,000 charging points throughout Europe. More than 500,000 people already use it.
You see them more and more often: the fast chargers from Shell Recharge. Not only at Shell filling stations, but also at Gamma and Karwei branches, for example. Thanks to the Shell Recharge App and the extensive charging infrastructure, Shell is making electric driving the new normal. We asked Shell Recharge for an explanation.
Many people know Shell as a supplier of traditional fuel. What role does Shell Recharge play for people with an EV?
Users of a fuel car only have the gas station to fill up with fuel. With an electric car you can charge on the street, at home or at work, or fast charge at a gas station or on location. Shell Recharge offers charging solutions for everyone, both consumers and business drivers, at all those different moments of their electric journey.
How does Shell Recharge help EV drivers to get an overview of the available charging points?
Owners of an electric car want to know exactly where a charging point is located in the (unknown) neighbourhood, and also want to be sure that they can charge when they arrive at that charging point. The Shell Recharge App contains a map that shows all charging points nearby, you can also search by city name or street name to find the charging points. With the handy filters you can select, for example, on connector type, availability and charging speed, so that you find a charging point that perfectly meets your needs. You can also see whether a charge point is free or occupied. The fast, extra fast and ultra fast public charging points charge the battery of your EV quickly and reliably. With the Shell Recharge App you have access to more than 300,000 public charging points in the Netherlands and Europe.
Can an EV driver use the Shell Recharge App with other providers?
Yes, you can use the Shell Recharge App and charge card with more than 385 roaming partners. This is possible because different providers of charge points support ‘interoperability’. Charging at one of those partners is therefore possible with your own Shell Recharge charge card and you do not need any other cards. It works in much the same way as using your mobile phone abroad. All charging sessions are conveniently collected on one clear, monthly invoice.
And what about the Shell Recharge charge card?
To order your charge card, first download the Shell Recharge App. Under the ‘Account’ section you will find the heading ‘Charge cards’, where you can order and activate the Shell Recharge charge card for free. Here you can even link a different payment method to each charge card. The pass will be sent to you by post, after which you can activate it in the Shell Recharge app.
What are Shell’s plans for the future?
For the answer to this question, we turn to Sietse Vis, e-mobility manager Benelux & France: “At the moment, the Netherlands is a leader when it comes to the adoption of electric cars, but still only 3 percent of all cars are electric. Imagine that this suddenly becomes 100 percent, then there are not enough charging points. We are therefore committed to doubling our network of fast chargers in the Netherlands within two years. Not only in the Netherlands, but in almost all countries in Europe, we work on We are currently working on the further roll-out of our network. Ultimately, Shell wants to become the number one in the field of electric charging. Shell is the largest in the world with its filling stations. So it is not surprising to follow the customer: will the customer electric driving, then we will also be there for them.”
EV drivers indicate that the availability of charging points is a major frustration, what is Shell Recharge doing?
Many of the Shell Recharge locations only have two charging points. Shell is currently working with Rijkswaterstaat and network operators to increase capacity at these locations so that Shell can install more chargers and increase availability at our existing highway locations. In addition, Shell Recharge wants fast chargers at many more convenient locations. You will see a lot of new chargers in the near future, especially at Gamma and Karwei DIY stores.
Shell Recharge is available in three different ways for people with an electric car:
- Finally, Shell Recharge operates on an ever-expanding network of charging points around the world. In the Netherlands you mainly see them in the form of fast chargers along the highway and national roads at Shell filling stations, but that is now changing rapidly. Together with large retailers and real estate companies, Shell is building fast chargers at strategic locations near shops, so that you can charge your car while shopping. There will soon be more Shell chargers available at all partners than at our Shell filling stations.
- Shell Recharge offers charge cards and an app for consumers and business drivers, giving them access to public charging points almost anywhere in Europe.
- For people with their own parking space or driveway, Shell Recharge offers a home charging point, including installation service.
