One of two MEBs

Ford is working on two electric models that will use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. We can show you one of those two electric newcomers in test suit for the first time today.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the first Ford vehicle to be developed as an electric model, but certainly not the last. From 2030, Ford only wants to supply electric passenger cars in Europe, so the brand will introduce a number of new electric models in the coming years. Two of them will have a platform that does not come from Ford, but from the Volkswagen Group. A packed test example of one of those two new electric Fords can be seen for the first time in these photos.
The new electric Ford in these photos looks to be an electric SUV-like in the segment of cars like the Volkswagen ID4, which means that the new model will be one step below the Mustang Mach-E. Under the skin you will encounter the MEB platform, a basis that you know from cars such as the aforementioned ID4, but also from models such as the Skoda Enyaq iV, Volkswagen ID3 and Cupra Born. So don’t be surprised if the battery packs and electric motors of the new electric Ford match those of its cousins from the Volkswagen Group. Earlier, Ford released the first unrevealing images of the electric SUV. In any case, they made it clear that the electric Ford does not share its body with products from the Volkswagen Group.

The packed test sample was caught from a great distance near the Ford Electrification Center, Ford’s factory in Cologne that is to be converted into an EV center. It is not yet known what the model will be called, but it is quite possible that Ford will pull an old model name out of mothballs for its electric SUV. After all, in 2021 it was announced that Ford had re-established model names Escort, Cortina, Capri, Granada and Orion in Europe. Since Ford will also stop producing the current generation Focus in a few years, it is also conceivable that the new SUV will be called ‘Focus Electric’ or something similar. We expect the electric newcomer to enter the market in 2024. A sportier-lined electric SUV will follow later on an MEB basis. If we look at the reused old model names, it could just be called Capri. Ford also comes with an electric version of the Puma. Ford follows with the two Volkswagen-based EVs, incidentally, with self-developed electric models.
