An important model.

Dimensions and platform

We start with the dimensions of the Hyunadi Ioniq 5. The car is not very easy to place in the current model range of the Korean manufacturer. The Ioniq 5, which Hyundai describes as a crossover despite its appearance as a hatchback, is 4.64 meters long and has a wheelbase of no less than 3 meters. That not only makes it longer than the i30 (4.34 meters), but also 14 centimeters longer than the Tucson (4.5 meters). The wheelbase of 3 meters exceeds that of the big Santa Fe, even by 23 centimeters. The enormous distance between the front and rear axle is comparable to that of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and, together with the flat floor of the Ioniq 5, promises to make an extremely spacious model. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 531 liters, regardless of the chosen version. If you throw the rear seat flat, a 1,591 liter sea of space is created. There is also a small luggage compartment under the ‘hood’. These so-called frunk the rear-wheel drive Ioniq 5 has a capacity of 57 liters and the four-wheel drive types 24 liters.

Technic

Rear wheel drive? Hell yes. In principle, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has rear-wheel drive, but Hyundai also offers the Ioniq 5 with four-wheel drive. Both the rear and all-wheel drive versions are available with a 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh battery pack. The entry-level version has the smallest battery pack and a 170 hp and 350 Nm strong electric motor on the rear axle. That basic version buzzes to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds. Those who combine the smallest battery pack with four-wheel drive will get a 72 hp and 255 Nm strong electric motor on the front axle and an 88 hp and 350 Nm strong unit on the rear axle. This 235 hp and 605 Nm strong version shoots to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds.

If you go for the larger 72.6 kWh battery pack, you immediately get more powerful electric motors. The rear-wheel drive variant is in this case 218 hp and 350 Nm strong, good for a 0-100 sprint of 7.4 counts. The absolute top version has an electric motor of 91 hp and 255 Nm on the front axle and a 211 hp and 350 Nm powerful unit in the rear. Those who kick that 306 hp and 605 Nm powerful version on their tail can already reach a speed of 100 km / h on the digital clock in 5.2 seconds. Hyundai promises an electric range of up to 470-480 kilometers for the Ioniq 5, but is keeping the figures of the other types under its cap for a while. All Ioniqs 5 have a top speed of 185 km / h. The basic model weighs about 1,800 kilos, the four-wheel drive top model weighs about 2 tons. Depending on the chosen version, you can pull 5 to 1,600 kilos with the Hyundai Ioniq.

Hyundai cannot release information about the range for the time being. We do know that the Ioniq 5 can load like crazy as standard. It can handle 400V and 800V and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent volts with electricity on a 350 kW charger in 18 minutes. Also interesting: the Ioniq 5 can charge devices such as laptops, but also other cars with a maximum charging power of 3.6 kW via a V2L connection (Vehicle to Load). For this there is a connection on the outside, but also at the rear seat.

Design

At the launch of the 45 Concept, Hyundai already indicated that the final production version would closely resemble the study model. That promise is being kept, because the Ioniq 5 looks like two drops of water. Of course there are differences. For example, the headlights of the Ioniq 5 are not of the ‘pixelated’ kind, although the LED daytime running lights that are placed around the LED kernels are made up of segments.

The rear lights are more similar to those of the 45 Concept. The fact that the Inoq 5 is simply carried under the Hyundai brand name is also evident from the fact that a logo of the Korean brand can be seen centrally on the rear. For a moment it seemed that Hyundai really wanted to make Ioniq a separate brand, like Genesis, for example. The cameras mounted on sticks that acted as side mirrors on the 45 Concept make way for conventional side mirrors on the Ioniq 5. The recessed handles survive the transition to the production stage, while the quirky wheels and wheel arch edges and silver inserts on the flanks are also retained. Hyundai does add a striped pattern to it. The wheels themselves have a diameter of 20 inches, the largest that Hyundai ever mounted under an EV. The hood of the Ioniq 5 extends to the wheel arches, which keeps the number of visible seams on the sleek EV to a minimum.

Interior

Living Space. That is the hip-sounding name with which Hyundai refers to the interior of the Ioniq 5. More hip terminology: Universal Island. That is the name for the center tunnel, which can be moved over a distance of 14 centimeters, with a storage compartment that both front and rear occupants can use. According to Hyundai you can easily get out on ‘the other side’. The dashboard itself is relatively minimalist. Directly behind the wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, which is optically fused with the 12.3-inch infotainment screen that is also given a place next to it. Below the right screen is a small plateau with a relatively simple and sleek button island underneath. More visual pleasure comes in the form of an extensive Advanced Head-Up Display, which more or less transforms a large part of the windscreen into an additional information supply. On the right side of the steering column is a second selector lever with which you can put the Ioniq 5 in P, R, N and D.

The interior is finished with what the Koreans describe as ‘ecologically friendly’ materials, such as plastic from recycled PET bottles and wool. The seats themselves are electrically adjustable. The seats and backs of the front seats are about thirty percent thinner than conventional ones, which should improve the space available for the rear passengers. From the sliding rear seat you have access to USB ports and an inductive charger. The interior is available in four color schemes and Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 with a large glass roof; a roof with solar cells is also available. Those who would like to relax stretched out can lay the backrests of the front seats almost completely flat.

Security systems

Hyundai stuffs the Ioniq 5 to the brim with passive and active safety systems. Features like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) and Safe Exit Assist (SEA) are available, as well as systems like Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto High Beam, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist ( RCCA), Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA) and Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA). In addition, the Ioniq 5 can operate semi-autonomously on the highway thanks to Highway Driving Assist 2.

availabilty

The first copies of the Ioniq 5 will be delivered in the summer of this year. The Netherlands can count itself lucky. Our country, together with France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Norway, is one of the few countries where a special introductory version of the Ioniq 5 will be available, the Project 45. This series, consisting of only 3,000 cars, is the first series to be available. The price of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Project 45 is € 58,995. The equipment includes 20-inch wheels, a roof with solar cells and the extensive head-up display. The prices and starting price of the regular versions of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 will follow later.

As mentioned, the Ioniq 5 is the first, but certainly not the last Hyundai of the Ioniq line. The brand will include the Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 7, successively a sporty electric sedan and a large electric SUV. By the way, do not expect all Ioniq models to have a strong retro design. Hyundai confirms to Techzle that Ioniq stands for innovative models, but that they do not necessarily have to be larded with influences from the past.
