Electric Porsche Macan: on the way to 2023

Electric Porsche Macan: on the way to 2023

Porsche has sent the first test copies of the upcoming fully electric Macan out the door. It will be on the market in 2023. There is something special going on: the Macan range is divided into two separate models.

Porsche indicated around this time last year that it will launch a completely new Macan in 2022, which will be supplied purely with electric powertrains. Today, Porsche is sending out the first photos of it, which go hand in hand with interesting new information about the Macan future.

For example, the electric Macan will not be on the market in 2022, but only in 2023. There is also interesting news for the current type. It would remain side by side with the new electric model series in the showrooms. That turns out to be different. The Macan with combustion engines will also get a successor, Porsche reports. That “conventionally powered” new Macan is scheduled for later this year. The question is whether it is a new model down to the smallest nut, or whether it is a revised version of the current generation. Recently, packed test copies of the current Macan surfaced in public.

Porsche says it will introduce a two-tier Macan range because electric cars are gaining popularity in Europe, but there are markets elsewhere in the world where the electric car is not integrating at the same pace. After the Taycan, the electric Macan will be the second all-electric Porsche and the first model to feature on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform developed in collaboration with Audi. That PPE base is a modular platform intended for electric cars that you should in fact see as the larger ‘premium brother’ of the MEB platform. The PPE platform recently debuted under the Audi A6 e-tron concept car, although the Audi Q6 e-tron, to be launched at the end of next year, is the first car from the Volkswagen Group to enter the PPE platform. The electric Taycan, like Audi’s E-tron GT, is on a different EV platform, which goes by the name J1.

The PPE platform can handle 800 volt charging structures, allowing charging capacities of up to 270 kW. Undoubtedly, the powertrain with which Audi equipped the A6 e-tron Concept already gives an idea of what powertrains you can expect. The electric sedan had a 100 kWh battery in its bottom, good for a range of up to 700 kilometers. The powertrain of the conceptual Audi consisted of two electric motors that together deliver 476 hp and 800 Nm.

The electric Macan distinguishes itself with more than just its powertrain and platform from the successor to the current generation Macan with combustion engines. The company from Zuffenhausen is turning the electric Macan into a so-called coupé-SUV. The packed copies in these photos have a remarkably steeply sloping roofline. In addition, the electric Macan will have flat headlamps with both shape and layout similar to that of the Taycan. Porsche applies stickers of large headlights to camouflage things somewhat and there is also a sticker behind the license plate that should suggest that there is a grille here. That part will most likely just be closed, because the actual cooling opening is lower in the nose.

More Macan news later this year. For the electric Macan we still have to wait for two more years.
