In February 2024, Autoland will finally be introduced to a completely new Renault 5. Renault is now releasing the first technical data of this retro-designed and relatively affordable electric hatchback.

Anyone who has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a production version since the presentation of the Renault 5 Prototype in January 2021 should put a big red circle on February 26 on their calendar. That is the day on which the electric Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is finally unveiled. We already knew that the electric Renault 5 will have a starting price of around 25 grand. Now Renault is also releasing the first technical information about its electric retro rocket.

The electric 5 takes over from the Zoe at Renault. What seems? Not only should it be less expensive than the Zoe, but it will also be a lot smaller. While the Zoe, like the Clio, is about 4.05 meters long, the Renault 5 is limited to 3.92 meters in length. So it is 13 centimeters shorter than a Renault Zoe. Renault manages to squeeze a battery pack of up to 52 kWh into that relatively short car length. The Zoe is also available with a battery of that size. According to Renault, the electric Renault 5 with the 52 kWh battery can travel up to 400 kilometers without recharging. This 52 kWh package is the only battery available at launch. A smaller 40 kWh package will follow later. Undoubtedly the promised Renault 5 of around 25 grand has that smaller package in its bottom.

The Renault 5 is on the now AmpR Small and previously called CMF-B EV platform, which partly uses technology from the Zoe, but is mainly new. Thanks to V2G technology, the Renault 5 can – depending on the market – also ‘return’ energy to the electricity grid.

Renault 5: including special charging indicator.

We have often written about the appearance of the Renault 5, although Renault has never fully shown the production version. It doesn’t do that now either. The French marketing apparatus does give us a glimpse of the final light units and a striking element on the front cover. Renault places a huge charging indicator there. When the battery pack is fully charged, a large ‘5’ will be visible here. AutoWeek has already had the Renault 5 drawn digitally. You can find what we believe to be an accurate preview here. The Renault 5 will face competition from the Volkswagen ID2, which will be released in 2025.
