Boxster without boxer
The future of the Porsche 718 family will soon look very different. The successors of the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman do not have a rumbling boxster engine, but one or more electric motors. The electric successor to the 718 Boxster can already be admired in these photos.
The Taycan is currently Porsche’s only electric model, but that won’t be long. Porsche is introducing an electric Macan and even an electric SUV that positions the brand above the Cayenne. The 718 family will also soon leave the combustion engine for what it is. Earlier this year, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the successor to the 718 will have an electric powertrain. These photos show the electric successor to the 718 Boxster for the first time during test work.
It is not very surprising that the 718s will receive an electric successor. At the IAA in Munich, Porsche already showed the Mission R in 2021, a 718 Cayman conceptual racer with an electric powertrain. The snapped test sample clearly shows design similarities with the aforementioned Mission R. We see a camouflaged test car with relatively flat, Taycan-like headlights, a front with large openings in the front bumper with vertical active slats and a buttock with lighting that appears to cover the entire area. width of the back. Centrally at the bottom of the rear bumper we see something that should resemble an exhaust, but most likely it is a fake one to cause confusion.
Whether the final body of the electric 718 is already hidden under the stickers or whether we are dealing with a very early prototype that partly uses existing sheet metal will become clear later. Like the electric Macan, the electric 718 will probably be on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform that Porsche has developed together with Audi. Of course we have to guess about the power. In any case, we assume that the electric 718s – which will see the light of day around 2024 – will not be as powerful as the nearly 1,100 hp Mission R.
