Electric Suzuki Burgman in the pipeline

Suzuki is working on an electrically powered scooter based on the well-known Burgman. The Japanese brand from Hamamatsu has recently applied for a patent for an electric scooter.

Electric Suzuki Burgman in the pipeline

While the transition to electric is now running at full speed in the automotive industry, electric is also slowly starting to get underway in the motor industry. This is also the case at Suzuki, where, according to the latest information, they are working hard on an electric scooter.

Now Suzuki has presented an electric concept model more often in the past, but it has never been more than that to date. However, the transition to zero-emissions powertrains is the reason Suzuki will withdraw from MotoGP at the end of this season.

In contrast to the hydrogen fuel cell Burgman, which has been fully tested for more than 10 years and received type approval in the EU in 2011, Suzuki now seems to want to go for a more conventional electrically powered variant. It is still too early for hydrogen at the moment.

For the now patented electrically powered motor scooter, Suzuki has taken the Burgman 125 as a starting point. The patent drawings show a scooter with the same frame underneath, with the electric drive mounted in it. Remarkably, many manufacturers choose to accommodate the drive in the swingarm in the case of scooters, in order to leave space in the central section for storage space or a battery pack.

The fact that Suzuki has applied for a patent for the electric Burgman does not mean that it will actually be taken into production. It would not be the first application that is ultimately not acted upon, in addition, Suzuki has also signed the agreement for the joint development of exchangeable battery packs.

On the other hand, it would be quite conceivable that it would be marketed by Suzuki as a sort of ‘intermediate solution’.
