Electric Volkswagens can supply power to the home network

Do you want to use your electric car as a kind of battery for your home at peak times? This is possible immediately with various electric Volkswagens. This makes bidirectional charging possible.

More and more car manufacturers are working on ‘vehicle to grid’ (V2G), where your car becomes part of the power grid. For example, we recently heard that Polestar is working on this and Hyundai is also already taking steps in this area. Volkswagen is also responding and is now introducing a kind of intermediate step towards V2G. It will immediately become possible to supply power to your home network with various electric ID models.

Please note: this concerns ‘vehicle to home’ (V2H) and not yet ‘vehicle to grid’. The power from the car battery is therefore only used by devices in your home. It will be possible with ID models with a 77 kWh battery pack. After a software update to ID Software 3.5, they can charge bidirectionally and thus supply power via a HagerEnergy S10 E Compact home charger and HagerEnergy’s Home Energy Management System. With the ‘HEMS’ system you can decide when you want to use power from your car.

Volkswagen states that a full battery can provide an average household with enough power to power the home for almost two days. V2G should also become possible at a later stage, but that is not the case yet. V2H will eventually also become possible with other home chargers, but for now only with the aforementioned HagerEnergy wallbox.
