Electric Golf not before 2028

End of story for Volkswagen Golf with combustion engine

The current generation of Volkswagen Golf is the last to have combustion engines. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer confirms this to the German Automobilwoche.

What the future of the Volkswagen Golf looks like now that the brand has been selling the electric ID3 for several years has long been uncertain. For a moment, Wolfsburg did not even seem to have made a decision about the continued existence of the Golf, although CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed in November last year that the Golf has a right to exist in addition to the ID3 and will therefore have a successor. The model name Golf lives on in the future, but may be attached to the ID label.

Schäfer says to the German Automobilwoche that the Volkswagen Golf will receive a fairly thorough facelift in 2024. Most likely, the CEO is talking about the arrival of a facelifted Golf VIII. According to Schäfer, the Golf can last until the end of this decade after that renewal round. “Then we will see how the segment develops. If the developments in the world around 2026 or 2027 are suddenly very different from what we think now, there could just be a new Golf.” Schäfer is probably talking about the arrival of a non-electric Golf. But it seems unlikely that it will. Volkswagen previously indicated that it will only sell electric passenger cars in Europe from 2033.

When will Volkswagen make the Golf a fully electric model? According to CEO Schäfer, at the earliest in 2028 when the new SSP platform is ready for use. In any case, the Golf designation will not disappear, Schäfer repeats. “It should be clear that we are not giving up iconic names such as Golf, Tiguan and GTI, but that we are transferring them to the electric world.”

Since 1983, Volkswagen has sold nearly 682,000 Golfs in the Netherlands over eight generations. This makes it by far the best-selling Volkswagen model line in our country. After all, in second place – counting from 1983 – we find the Polo with 396,427 units delivered.
