'Error in Huawei AppGallery makes paid Android apps free'

A bug in Huawei’s AppGallery allows users to download paid Android apps for free. It does take some technical knowledge, but in principle anyone can abuse the problem. Huawei would have known about the problem for weeks, but it still hasn’t solved it.

Where is the error?

Android Police reports that the issue in Huawei’s AppGallery was discovered by Dylan Roussel, an Android developer. He indicates that the error is in the API of the AppGallery, which is the interface that allows two applications to communicate with each other. This API does not provide protection for paid apps. and thus, with some technical knowledge, you can obtain an APK link for paid apps and then download it for free. An APK is a file in which the code of an app is written. According to Roussel, the problem is not with the developers of the app, but according to him it is Huawei itself.

Huawei has been informed, but problem not solved yet

Dylan Roussel warned Huawei about the flaw in their AppGallery last February. However, the problem is still not solved. This means that paid apps can still be downloaded for free. Huawei has acknowledged the email containing Roussel’s warning and assigned an ID to the error. Huawei is currently working on a solution

Too bad you might think, because then you can no longer download paid apps for free. Well, not quite, the flaw makes it easier for malicious parties to put malicious elements or codes in an APK file. Elements that are often not easy to notice. They could also use the API to download paid apps completely free of charge, without using the AppGallery. This therefore affects the app developers who do not receive any income as a result, or you as a user because you download a potentially ‘dangerous’ app.
