Estrema Fulminea: hypercar with solid-state battery

Another new player has emerged in the kingdom of hypercars. The very young Automobili Estrema shows a first set of teasers of his Fulminea baptized extremist. That will not just be a car, according to Estrema it has solid-state batteries.

Automobili Estrema is a new manufacturer of hypercars. The company was founded by Gianfranco Pizzuto, co-founder of Fisker Automotive, which was defunct in its original form. Estrema will build 61 copies of the Fulminea in Modena, Italy, a heavily spray-painted hypercar that has its undoubtedly exuberant appearance hidden under a canvas for the time being.

According to Automobili Estrema, the Fulminea will be an electric hypercar with four electric motors that together provide a system power of – hold on – 2,040 hp. The 1,500-kilo monster must be able to sprint from a standstill to 320 km / h in ten seconds. The battery pack has a capacity of 100 kWh, good for an estimated WLTP range of 520 kilometers.

It is striking that the battery pack consists partly of solid-state batteries. At least, that’s what Estrema claims. For these solid-state batteries, the new Italian company Avesta Battery Engineering and IMECAR Elektronic has joined. Solid-state batteries are seen as the holy grail of battery technology. They have a higher energy density, can withstand higher temperatures and are said to have a longer life than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Where lithium-ion specimens use a liquid as a connection between the two poles, this is a solid with solid-state batteries.

The production start of the Fulminea is scheduled for 2023, undoubtedly due to the development time required for the solid-state batteries.
