‘EU postpones vote on fuel engine ban’

It all seemed in cans and jugs, but nothing could be further from the truth. The ban on the sale of passenger cars with a fuel engine as of 2035 cannot yet be laid down for the time being. That has to do with the ‘German blockade’ that came at the last minute.

Less than a month ago, it finally seemed completely certain: by 2035, fuel engines in new passenger cars will be the end of the EU. Well, that wasn’t the end of the story after all. Earlier this week it appeared that Germany is not yet ready to agree to the bill that is now before it. They want to look at a possible role for synthetic fuels after 2035 and for the time being the European Commission has not yet come up with a concrete counter-proposal. Bloomberg now understands that therefore there will be no voting for the time being.

Originally, the plan was to hit the plans for 2035 next Tuesday (March 7). That will not happen, a spokesperson for the Swedish delegation said on Twitter. This procedure is unusual, because normally such a final round of voting is no more than a formality. As mentioned, the bill as it stands was already approved by the European Parliament last month and the subsequent round of voting with the relevant ministers of the member states usually leads to the same result. Incidentally, not only Germany is now in favor of the deal, Italy and Poland are also threatening not to agree.
