As the owner of a smart lock and smart video doorbell, you’ve probably thought about this: wouldn’t it be more convenient if those two things work together better? Eufy now offers a clear answer to that: yes, that is more convenient.
Eufy is a Chinese provider of various smart home products. The company is known for its doorbells and cameras, which are often well received, partly due to a good price-quality ratio. Now the manufacturer comes with something new and this via kickstarter, namely the Eufy Security Video Smart Lock. So this is a smart video doorbell and smart lock in one system, which works together seamlessly. The cost: $399. The expected release date is May 2022.
This idea solves a specific first world problem on. When someone rings the doorbell, first open the doorbell app. Is there someone at the door you trust and wants to get in? Then you close one app and open that of the smart lock. Then you open the door remotely, to switch apps again to see if everything is going well. The Eufy system takes a few actions off your hands and therefore presents everything under one roof.
The system consists of a video doorbell, with a numeric keypad underneath and a bell for ringing. There is a smart lock on the inside of the door. There is also a gong, so you can hear clearly when someone is ringing the doorbell.
Has Eufy found a gap in the market?
Eufy seems to have found – or rather, punched – a gap in the market. The Chinese company wanted to raise an amount of almost 46,000 euros via Kickstarter. At the time of writing, the counter stands at 691,000 euros and a little. So that’s about fifteen times the amount that the manufacturer initially wanted to raise.
There are still a lot of things we don’t know about the product. As beautiful as it all sounds, these types of products stand or fall with a good battery life. Although we know that the battery in this system has a capacity of 10,000 mAh, we don’t know how long it takes to empty that battery.
A constant WiFi connection and the dual function of doorbell and door opener (by entering a PIN code for the smart lock) we can imagine that the battery runs out faster than with other smart doorbells.
A fairly standard doorbell
Furthermore, the Eufy Security Video Smart Lock seems to be a fairly standard doorbell. The system has a 2k resolution, a field of view of 160 degrees and an aspect ratio of 4:3. In addition, there is both a microphone and a speaker, so you can communicate effortlessly with the person in front of the door.
Of course there is also a motion sensor and a system that recognizes people, so that you receive a lot of information after receiving a notification.
The smart lock does not offer an option for using keys on the outside of the door, as Tedee does, for example. And that while that is the most secure backup. If something goes wrong with the connection or the system, you do not immediately have to drill the lock to enter.
You can, however, use the aforementioned numeric keypad or your fingerprint to enter. Finally, no subscription is required to view saved images. That in turn saves on costs.
