Lexus takes a European scoop to the exhibition floor in Geneva, because after the Japanese ES, the European version of the luxury sedan now also has optional digital side mirrors.
The Lexus ES has been available at home market Japan since 2018 with the digital side mirrors, but now also the European version follows. The concept is now known: the side mirrors are replaced on both sides by cameras. The images from those cameras are projected on 5-inch screens in the side doors. After Lexus, several manufacturers now work with such a technique, such as Audi and Honda.
Lexus mentions as a major advantage that the more compact digital “mirrors” are more aerodynamic, causing less wind noise. The digital mirrors also provide less distraction, because drivers have to turn their faces less. If the mirrors are fogged, then Lexus has a solution in the form of a “demister” button. For the time being, the mirrors are optionally only available for the ES 300h. The scoop for our continent will be presented at the Salon in Geneva. The market introduction will follow later in March.
