European Parliament: ban on sales of combustion engines from 2035

The final legal text has yet to be worked out and signed, but the bullet is through the church. The European Parliament has voted to completely ban combustion engines from 2035… from cars and vans. It is not known when this will also apply to motorcycles.

European Parliament: ban on sales of combustion engines from 2035

The fact that in the entire CO2 discussion the problem is not so much with the combustion engine, but with fossil fuels – even with so-called e-fuels there is 0% CO2 emissions – the (oil) stupid parliamentarians in the European Parliament do not want to in. Just like that energy companies have already stepped on the brakes because the energy network is heavily overloaded.

And so the plan of the Commission led by Frans Timmermans has been adopted that will ban the sale of cars and vans with a combustion engine by 2035.

Last Wednesday the EP voted on the issue, with 339 voting in favour, 249 against and 24 abstaining. The legislation is an important part of the Fit for 55 package and requires car manufacturers to reduce their fleet-wide emission averages by 100% from 2035, with interim steps in 2025 and 2030.

With the decision, the European Parliament maintains the original date of phasing out the Commission in 2025. The final text now has to be worked out in consultation with the Council. Environment ministers will sign their version of the legislation on June 28 at a summit in Luxembourg.

An alternative amendment tabled by the European People’s Party in plenary would have set the emissions reduction target for 2035 at 90 percent without a clear end date for the combustion engine, but that was rejected. The plan would have allowed the continued sale of a limited number of combustion engine vehicles, but was strongly opposed by green parties.

Although the legislation now enacted only specifically mentions cars and vans, that does not mean that motorcycles will be the winner. The question will be when rather than whether the combustion engine will be phased out in motorcycles.
