EV supply up by 33 percent in 2021 in the Netherlands

The year isn’t quite over yet, but the end is in sight. We look back on a year full of EV news and that also means that there are now considerably more electric cars on the price list than on January 1.

That things are going fast with the rise of the EV is probably immediately clear when you take a look outside. The chance that an EV with year 2021 will appear in the picture is life-sized. At AutoWeek, however, we don’t want to base ourselves solely on feelings and assumptions, so it’s time to back the premonitions with hard numbers.

The best tool for this is of course Carbase, the most extensive car database in the Netherlands and the surrounding area. First of all, we want to know how many different electric models were on the price list in 2020. We do, however, impose a number of conditions. For example, we start from the moment a car appeared on the Dutch price lists and therefore in Carbase. This concerns all cars that were available somewhere in the year in question, so also the models that disappeared or were introduced in that year.

In addition, we limit ourselves to passenger cars. ‘Vans’ that are fully classified for passenger transport are therefore included, but delivery drivers are not. That does not matter much for the number of models, because the second ‘rule’ is that we sweep different variants of one model into one heap. Peugeot can therefore call its luxury passenger van e-Traveller and the regular version Expert, but that still counts as one model. The same goes for body styles: the Audi E-tron and E-tron Sportback count as one, as do the Porsche Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo.

Audi Etron GT vs. Porsche Taycan

That leaves some room for discussion. For example, a Smart Fortwo and a Smart Forfour count as two models, because in our opinion the difference is significant. We see the closed Fortwo and the convertible as one model. So you might have slightly different figures, but don’t count on big differences.

33 percent more

A search in Carbase shows that according to the above conditions, there were 48 different models on the price list in 2020. In 2021 there will be no fewer than 64 under the same conditions. Yes, that is an increase of 16 units, well over 33 percent! In total, even more models were added than this, because cars have also disappeared. The list of electric newcomers for 2022 shows no fewer than 21 cars, again not including bodywork and other variants of existing models. It must be said that the Citroën ë-Berlingo, Opel Combo-e Life, Peugeot e-Rifter, and Toyota Proace City Verso Electric are almost identical. In fact, this is one model that appears in four different places on the price list. If we still take a look at company cars, then the zeal of Stellantis logically leads to an enormous increase in the supply. In addition to the order versions of the aforementioned models, thanks to these brands, new large orderers with an electric powertrain, such as the Opel Movano-e, are also available here.

In the vast majority of cases, the newcomers do not have a direct predecessor and are therefore actually an addition to the existing range of the manufacturer in question. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 are among the most important newcomers to the list, but let’s not forget that the wildly popular Skoda Enyaq is also a 2021 product. Its direct brother, the Volkswagen ID4, appeared narrowly in December 2020, but actually only really got going this year. The Ford Mustang Mach-E did not officially appear until 2021, although we knew what the car looked like well before January. It is also striking how busy the German premium brands have been. Audi and BMW each introduced two new electric models, Mercedes even three. An honorable mention is also in order for the Dacia Spring, because with a starting price of €17,585 it is by far the cheapest car on the list.

2022

All this naturally raises the question of whether the trend will continue in 2022. We won’t know for sure until a year from now, but it is already clear that a lot of electrical news will be fired at us again. As a treat, we will soon present the ten cars that, as far as we can see now, will be the most important newcomers in this category.
