You may have noticed that the App Store on the iPhone and iPad occasionally shows advertisements. Apple introduced ads to the App Store in 2019 and has only expanded advertising since then. This week, Apple is stepping it up again, as more ads are added to the digital store.

Starting today, a new ad unit has been added to the App Store home screen. Apple indicated last year that more advertising will be shown on the main tab ‘Today’. That plan has now been implemented, so that you immediately see the advertisement when you open the App Store. The new ad block is directly below the first recommended app. So a pretty prominent place.

The new ad space is for developers who want to get more exposure for their app in the App Store. According to Apple, the simple design of the ad should make it easier for developers to advertise. Apple only needs to approve the app icon, name and caption of the ad for the new ad block.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to click away the ads in the App Store or to turn them off in any other way. To avoid confusing ads with real search results, Apple has identified ads in several ways. All apps that fall under the advertising heading have a small blue button that says ‘Advertising’. So you can easily recognize them.

The fact that more advertisements can now be seen in the App Store fits in with Apple’s new strategy. The company plans to triple its advertising revenue in the future. As a result, it is to be expected that we will soon see commercial breaks in many more places. For example, Apple analyst Mark Gurman has already predicted that advertisements will also be added to Maps.

The new ad block currently only appears on iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later. On iPad, you won’t see the new ad space in the App Store yet. It is also expected that this will change soon, you will soon see the ad unit in older iOS versions and on the iPad.
