EVs and hybrids more popular than last year

In terms of sales figures, 2020 is still a special year to date, due to the huge decline in car sales. Yet there is more news; the fully and partly electrically powered cars have become relatively more popular than last year.

Of course, the news about car sales in our country is dominated by the blows that fall because of the corona crisis. In April, new sales were no less than 53 percent lower than a year earlier. Doom and gloom for the car industry. However, there is good news for the providers of alternative powered cars, because although the absolute numbers are disappointing, more and more Dutch people are opting for an EV or a (plug-in) hybrid. This is evident from Bovag’s figures for the first four months of the year.

Hybrid cars in particular are experiencing tremendous growth: a mere 15 percent of new cars sold this year were hybrids. That is relatively double compared to last year. A total of 17,445 new hybrids were registered in 2020 to date. Fully electric cars also rose in popularity; 9 percent of the cars sold to date in 2020 were fully electric, compared to 7 percent in the same period last year. 10,233 EVs have been worn to date this year.

The most popular EV is still the Tesla Model 3. However, sales have so far been 43 percent lower than last year. The Kia e-Niro is not far behind, with 1,539 copies sold, the Kia is just under 300 copies behind the Tesla this year. The hybrid Niro is also doing very well. With 2,072 units sold, it is the most popular partially electrically driven car of 2020 to date. The Toyota’s Corolla, Yaris and C-HR follow in places two, three and four.
