Explanation: Are AirPods (Pro) waterproof?

“Are AirPods waterproof?” The editors get that question iPhone submitted regularly. In this article we will show once and for all how (not) waterproof AirPods and AirPods Pro are.

So (not) waterproof are the AirPods and AirPods Pro

To get straight to the point: no, the AirPods are not waterproof. That kite also applies to the more expensive variant: the AirPods Pro are therefore also not resistant to water. Apple itself does not allow any misunderstandings about this. The cleaning instructions for the earplugs state that you should never let the AirPods (Pro) come into contact with water.

There is, however, a difference between the regular and more luxurious earplugs. The former, the ‘normal’ AirPods, are namely not waterproof and neither water resistant. This means that you must ensure that they do not come into contact with liquids at all. You should also keep the charging case far away from water (and other liquids).

The AirPods Pro, the more luxurious variant, are also not waterproof, though water resistant. They are namely certified with the IPX4 safety standard. In concrete terms, this means that you can use the wireless Apple earbuds during exercise, as long as you do not go swimming. The charging case of the Pro earbuds is not water resistant: keep it far away from water.

AirPods (Pro) got wet anyway? You must do this

Did your earplugs get wet? Then clean them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and let them dry. Did water also get into the charging case? Then turn it upside down with the lid open, so that the ‘AirPods holder’ can leak out.

Whether your AirPods (Pro) can still be saved depends on the circumstances. If you have exercised with the earplugs, there is probably not much to worry about. You probably just need to take the AirPods off and let them dry, after which you can use them again.

Did the Apple earbuds take a ride in the washing machine, or did you accidentally drop them in the water? Then you may be less lucky. Apple strongly advises never to immerse the AirPods (Pro) in water.

Are your AirPods broken?

If your earbuds have died, it’s best to contact Apple or the retailer where you bought them. This party may be able to do something for you. However, do not expect that you will just get new AirPods: Apple does not guarantee if you have let the earplugs come into contact with liquids.
