With the heart of the M3/M4?
Is the Toyota GR Supra with 340 hp strong straight-six from BMW not sporty enough for you? Then you don’t have to take Toyota’s coupe off your shortlist. It seems that Toyota has an even sportier variant of the GR Supra in the pipeline.
In 2019, the legendary Supra model name returned to Toyota. The GR Supra, developed together with BMW, is available – depending on the market – with a blown 2.0 four-cylinder and with six-cylinder BMW engines.
The 340 hp (elsewhere: 387 hp) strong 3.0 six-in-line was initially the only power source available in the GR Supra in the Netherlands, later the 258 hp 2.0 four-cylinder became available in our country. A briefly wrapped Toyota GR Supra has now been spotted on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, which suggests that Toyota has an extra sporty GRMN version in the pipeline.
The 45th Anniversary Edition of the GR Supra already has a rear wing, but that’s a different one.
The snapped Toyota GR Supra wears a small amount of camouflage on its nose and we also encounter stickers with a somewhat psychedelic print on the rear. The front bumper is broadly similar to that of the GR Supra as you have known it for several years, but if you look closely you will see that Toyota has added extra lips and edges. At the rear, it is a new wing placed on the tailgate that attracts attention, which will undoubtedly provide extra downforce. Toyota supplies a special one in certain markets 45th Anniversary Edition with a wing on the tailgate, but that copy differs from the unit on the back of this test copy. We see perforated brake discs behind the alloy. That is also new for the GR Supra. It also seems that this prototype is closer to the asphalt than any other variant of the GR Supra. This of course indicates that this possible GRMN version has a stiffer chassis.
It is not inconceivable that this Toyota GR Supra ‘GRMN’ has the 480 hp 3.0 inline six of the BMW’s M3 and M4 in its snout. In any case, BMW can also connect this machine to a manual gearbox, while the GR Supra with six-cylinder engine is only available with an automatic transmission, unlike the four-cylinder version. For the time being, however, nothing is officially known about the arrival of this engine in the GR Supra. In short: just wait and see.
