The function to search for Wi-Fi networks via Facebook has now been made available worldwide. Users can thus find public networks that companies share.
Search WiFi networks with Facebook
The function is not completely new, because the social network Facebook already started testing ‘WiFi search’ in a few countries last year. The Dutch also reported that they could already use the service. The option is now available worldwide, Facebook writes on its blog.
To search for WiFi, tap the ‘hamburger menu’ in the Facebook app at the bottom right; the icon with three lines on top of each other. Scroll down a little in that menu until you see ‘search for WiFi’. If you want to use the function, an adjustment of your settings may be required. Facebook always wants to have access to your location. If you have not enabled that and want to use WiFi search, you can still do so.
Map with directions
If everything is set correctly, a map will appear on the screen, showing you immediately where there are public Wi-Fi networks in your area. These are companies that have opened up hotspots from their Facebook page. In the Facebook app you can then go directly to the relevant pages of companies or request directions to the WiFi location. We do recommend that you always use a VPN when logging into a public network. Also read our tip article about setting up a VPN on your iPhone.
In its blog post, Facebook calls the Wi-Fi Search feature “ useful ” for people who travel or are on the go, especially in areas where cellular networks are scarce.
