Facelift Friday: Renault Twingo

In the lower echelons of the car market, investments are only made when it is really necessary. According to Renault, that was apparently the case in 2019, because then the Twingo got a fairly solid refurbishment.

The so-called A segment is currently struggling. Making money in the lower echelons of the market has become almost impossible and, surprisingly, that also applies to achieving the increasingly strict CO2 standards. The result: the lifespan of small cars is extended to the limit and the introduction of novelties takes a long time to come.

The above also applies to Renault, but the French are not as furious as some competitors. The third generation of the Twingo dates from 2014 and is therefore not even that old by the standards of the current A-segment. With the facelift of 2019, the car was thoroughly modernized all around, without changing the shape of the light clusters. However, the lamps were given a different layout. The headlights were provided with trendy, C-shaped elements that serve as daytime running lights and as direction indicators. This put an end to the extra, round light unit in the bumper that was introduced in the Twingo II during the facelift.

LED technology also appeared at the rear in the form of a C-shaped element within the existing frames. More important, however, is the way in which the bumper areas around were addressed. At the rear, a large black plastic element around the number plate disappeared. Instead, the Twingo got a neat, integrated number plate cutout in body color.

At the front, the air intake was visually reduced, again by resolutely referencing a black plastic element to the exit. Depending on the version, the new, smoother bumpers are fitted with elements in chrome or a distinctive contrast color.

Also from the side, a recent Twingo is clearly distinguishable from an earlier one. For example, other wheel designs appeared and the plastic strip on the doors was provided with a layer of paint. For the left side there is another striking addition: an air scoop that must provide the rear engine with extra cooling air. The striking opening already appeared on the sporty Twingo GT in 2016, but can even be found on the electric Twingo Electric today.
