Fast charge your iPad: that’s how it works and these models support it

Have you recently purchased an iPad? You can charge many iPads much faster, as long as you use the right adapter. In this tip, we explain which iPads can fast charge and how.

iPad fast charging: this is how it works

As with older iPads, Apple simply supplies the iPad mini 5 and iPad Air 2019 with a 10 Watt charger. This takes a long time to charge your tablet, while the recently released iPads also support fast charging. As a result, your iPad is about 60 to 70 percent full after an hour of charging, while the battery with the included charger is only 40 percent full after an hour of charging.

The new iPad Pro (2020) also supports fast charging and comes standard with an 18 Watt adapter. This means you don’t need any other cables or adapters to quickly top up the device’s battery.

These iPad models all support fast charging:

  • iPad Pro (2020)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 inches (2015 or newer)
  • iPad Pro 10.5 inches (2017)
  • iPad Pro 11 inch (2018)
  • iPad mini 2019
  • iPad Air 2019

Because the iPad Pro (2018) also comes with a USB-C charger, this iPad uses fast charging as standard. For the other suitable iPads, however, you do need a different adapter and cable than the one in the box.

You need this to charge an iPad faster

To fill your iPad battery faster, you need two things: an 18, 29 or 30 Watt USB-C adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable. The 18 Watt adapter is supplied by Apple as standard with the iPad Pro, while the 29 and 30 Watt chargers are supplied with MacBooks. Fortunately, you can also purchase these chargers separately from the Apple Store or other online stores.

You can buy the 18 Watt charger for 35 euros, while you pay 55 euros for a 30 Watt adapter. A USB-C to Lightning cable you can get it at home for about 25 euros. The cheapest option to charge your iPad faster will cost you 60 euros once. Not a small amount, but it does save you a lot of time and hassle with charging your iPad. This way you never leave the house with an empty tablet.
