Ferrari 250 GTO yields almost €50 million

When a Ferrari 250 GTO goes under the hammer, you know someone will come up with a shockingly large amount of money. That has happened again now. A copy from 1962 will go down as one of the most expensive cars ever.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is not only the holy grail among Ferraris, but actually in the entire car world. The racer from the early 1960s has won the title of ‘most expensive car ever’ several times. In 2018, one was auctioned for a reported $70 million, instantly becoming the record holder. In 2022, however, that record was broken by a bizarre margin by the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR ‘Uhlenhaut’. One of the two copies (then both owned by Mercedes-Benz itself) reportedly sold for €135 million. The now auctioned Ferrari 250 GTO does not come close to that, but it does end up in the top three most expensive cars ever.

Almost €48 million was paid for the copy from the popular first year of manufacture, 1962. The car was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in New York. What makes this car special (apart from the fact that it is one of the first batch) is that it is a car with a special racing history. It was used by Scuderia Ferrari itself and was, among other things, the class winner in the 1,000 km of the Nürburgring in its year of manufacture. In the same year the car competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is also the only Ferrari 250 GTO that was newly built with a 4.0-liter V12 in the nose instead of the regular 3.0. Compared to the other (also shockingly expensive) 250 GTOs, this one is undoubtedly worth the money. It is not known who took the wallet.
