Fiat Tempra (1991) – Into the Wild

This Fiat Tempra may not be elegant, in beautiful condition or sought after as a youngtimer, but in our opinion it deserves some attention. Secretly, the Tempra has become extremely rare.

Ask yourself when was the last time you saw a Fiat Tempra and chances are you’ll be surprised to find that it was a very long time ago. This once quite common middle class car has almost completely disappeared from the Dutch street scene more than thirty years after its introduction. Our data shows that there are still more than 100 Tempras on Dutch license plates, the lion’s share of which no longer has an active MOT. So assume that there are only a few dozen left to spot in the wild. This spot by AutoWeek forum member Karmann Ghia is therefore worthy of praise in our opinion. You can bet there were plenty of people walking past carelessly.

The Dutch sales counter of the Fiat Tempra stopped at more than 12,000 copies and the first full sales year was also the best year. That was 1991, the year in which this SW was also registered. The SW (also called the Tempra Weekend) was clearly designed with the aim of being the most efficient pack mule possible. Nothing ‘lifestyle station‘, no, just a straight forward station wagon with a luggage compartment that you said you to. To make loading extra easy, the middle part of the rear bumper could be folded down, so that you can slide the Tempra full of stuff from the back without a lifting threshold.

Apparently that was exactly what the owner of this Tempra was looking for more than fourteen years ago, because at the beginning of 2009 the car changed owners for the last time (and for the first time!). Only two owners in almost 32 years; this Fiat Tempra apparently does not disappoint its owners. In the meantime, the years have started to show on him, but he does not look really tired either. There is still barely two years of MOT on it and the last inspection did not yield any points for attention, so it also seems to be good under the skin. Above all, keep driving, who knows, one day this will be the last Fiat Tempra SW in the Netherlands that is still driving.
