Fine for phone use behind the wheel sharply increased

As of 1 March, the judiciary will take stronger action against motorists who drive with a mobile phone in their hand. The traffic police will also hand out higher fines for unnecessary left-hand driving. Traffic fines will also be reduced, including for speeding on the highway.

The fine for holding and using your mobile while driving is not only unwise and risky, but also an expensive affair. Until now, the fine for this was €250, but with effect from 1 March you will lose €350 for the same offense. An increase of no less than 40 percent. Unnecessary left-hand driving on the highway will also be fined more severely from this month. The fine for this will increase by no less than 47 percent to €220. An identical increase applies to the transport of minors without a seat belt. In addition, the fine for not giving way to a priority vehicle – such as a police car with flashing light and siren – will also increase from €250 to €350.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Justice and Security is reducing a number of fines for other traffic offences. The traffic fines for speeding on the highway will be reduced by 15 percent, although this only applies to the first 10 km/h that you drive above the permitted speed limit. In addition, the fine-free foot for the first 3 km/h that you drive too fast now also applies to 130 km/h roads.

Causing unnecessary noise or noise will be reduced from €400 to €250. Illegal parking in a disabled parking space will now cost you €310 instead of €400 and passing people in and out without giving them the opportunity to get in or out will now cost you a print of €250 instead of €400.
