The latest update to the Mozilla Foundation’s web browser inaugurates a new system for managing and protecting your personal data online. Here’s how to set it up.
Firefox 65 is here. The Mozilla Foundation has updated its web browser which now supports the AV1 codec and improves language management in the program.
But the most important innovation remains undoubtedly the inauguration of a revised and corrected content blocking system, offering more freedom in the control of users’ personal data.
1. Access the data protection panel
To access the data protection module configuration panel, all you have to do is open the main menu, enter the Option menu, then go to the Privacy and security section.
It is also possible to access it even more quickly by entering about: preferences # privacy directly in the address bar of the browser.
2. Choose your mode
Firefox 65 offers three content blocking modes that allow you to apply more or less strict blocking rules.
Standard mode only works when you are using an incognito window and just blocks known trackers.
The Strict mode, much less permissive, blocks all trackers without exception. The most worried users will undoubtedly be tempted to use it, but the display of certain sites may be very strongly disturbed.
However, if you wish to apply this mode, it may be necessary to add your favorite sites to the blocking exceptions.
Finally, the Custom mode will allow you, as its name suggests, to configure content blocking according to your needs.
3. Configure the Custom mode
The Custom mode is undoubtedly the most interesting since it gives you the choice in what you want to block or not.
To make sure you never get tracked, turn on Tracker Blocking, then from the drop-down menu, choose In All Windows. This will give you tracking protection every time you use Firefox, not just when you use private browsing.
Regarding the blocking of cookies, Third Party Trackers are selected by default. You can strengthen the blocking by choosing from the drop-down menu to block cookies from unvisited sites, all third-party cookies or all cookies. However, these last three options may prevent certain sites from functioning properly. It will then be necessary to apply exceptions.
4. Discover blocked content and apply exceptions
Whenever content is blocked on a site, a shield icon will appear in the address bar. A click on it will allow you to access the details of the different blocked elements.
If your configuration of the Custom mode were to prevent the display of all or part of a website, it will be necessary to apply exceptions by disabling the blocking for this site. This is for example the case on Facebook or Twitter where content blocking prevents the user from logging in.
To correct this inconvenience, click on the i button located on the left in the address bar of the site consulted then, in the section dedicated to content blocking, click on the Disable blocking button for this site.
