First compact electric Alfa Romeo is called Milano

An electric successor to Giulia and an electric 208-like one are also on the way

First compact electric Alfa Romeo is called Milano

It was long thought that the compact and electric crossover that Alfa Romeo is working on behind the scenes would be given the name Brennero. However, that’s not going to happen. The ‘baby Alfa’ to be launched on the market next year is called Milano. We also know more about that newcomer.

Alfa enthusiasts probably know the model name Milano from the Alfa Romeo 75, which was sold under that name in the United States. The brand will soon put that model name on a brand new compact crossover. This will be a technical sister model to cars such as the Peugeot 2008, Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600. The Alfa Romeo Milano will be the first Alfa Romeo volume model ever to be available with an electric drivetrain, although the model will also be available with mild-hybrid petrol engines. Indeed, just like his many Stellantis nephews and nieces.

The Alfa Romeo Milano will be presented in April 2024 in the city after which it is named: Milan. We expect him in the Netherlands around September. Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato characterizes the Milano as a car with which the brand wants to appeal to owners of the Mito and Giulietta, among others, even though the Giulietta has in a certain sense been succeeded by the Tonale. In addition, the Milano will – at least temporarily – function as an entry-level Alfa. Temporary? Yes, Alfa Romeo is also working on a B-segmenter that is not a crossover. Although Imparato has not stated an exact sales forecast to AutoWeek, among others, the CEO estimates that the Alfa Romeo Milano will account for around 40 percent of Alfa sales in Europe.

Electrical Q4

The Alfa Romeo Milano will roll off the production line in Tychy, Poland, where the Jeep Avenger also sees the light of day. It will be available as a 136 hp mild hybrid and with a fully electric drivetrain. What seems? That drivetrain is different from that of its technical sister models. For example, Imparato already indicates that the electric Alfa Romeo Milano will have four-wheel drive. The Milano probably has two electric motors and is therefore expected to have a higher power than the 156 hp of cars such as the Peugeot e-2008 and Jeep Avenger.

Electric successor Giulia and hatchback in B-segment

Anyone who fears that Alfa Romeo will become a brand with only EVs with the introduction of the Milano and before that of the Tonale is wrong. According to the Alfa Romeo CEO, aerodynamics are very important for electric models and Imparato believes that the sedan shape is too. The CEO confirms that Alfa Romeo will launch an electric successor to the Giulia that will simply be in sedan form. After the Alfa Romeo Milano, the Italians will come up with an electric D-segmenter – the successor to the Giulia – and with a B-segmenter in the style of cars like the Peugeot 208. However, it has not yet been determined which of these will be available in 2025. unveiled and which will come on the market a year later. The first Alfa Romeo with only electric powertrains will be presented in 2025. This may be the Giulia successor. From 2027, every new Alfa Romeo presented will be fully electric. From that year on, new Alfas with combustion engines will no longer be sold. So it’s the end of the story for the mild-hybrid versions of the Milano.

Finally, Jean-Philippe Imparato explains his views on how the European Union is dealing with the electrification of the automotive sector. Imparato calls the EU policy unsuitable, as well as the people who determine the policy. The EU is said to be completely underestimating the danger that Chinese electric cars pose to the European car industry. The CEO also sees no point in implementing heavy price reductions on models. Alfa Romeo is absolutely not going to participate in the price war. Imparato says that it does not want to jeopardize the brand name and brand value of Alfa Romeo.

AutoWeek recently took an extensive look ahead at Alfa Romeo’s (electric) crossover. The digital drawings that we presented to you at the time were not based on air, but on leaked images of the car that we now know is called Milano.
