First Formula 1 car of 2022 unveiled

Haas is the first Formula 1 team to pull the curtain on its new car for 2022: the VF-22. Although it is still a virtual version of Haas’ car, it gives a good impression of what the team’s final car will look like.

The Formula 1 cars look quite different this year due to the changed regulations. The aerodynamics are less complex, which can already be seen with the VF-22. The front wing of the new Haas rises a little further and contains two large endplates on both sides. The front wheels have two extra carbon wings. Seen from above, it is noticeable that the floor of the VF-22 tapers towards the rear. Previously, the floor often ran in a straight line to the rear and there were all kinds of wings on it for aerodynamics. That is no longer the case this year. The rear spoiler of the VF-22 is much more rounded and it is also noticeable that the exhaust sticks out much further than last year. The livery of the car has remained largely identical, with the main sponsor Uralkali’s Russian flag prominently displayed.

In addition to the revised aerodynamics, the new 18-inch wheels are also striking, which are also making their debut in the premier class of motorsport this year. All in all, Formula 1 and the FIA hope that the new aerodynamic elements will ensure that the cars cause less ‘disturbed’ airflow and can follow each other more easily. The expectation is that the new cars will be slower than before because they generate less downward pressure. The weight also increased from a minimum of 752 kilograms in 2021 to 795 kilograms in 2022. The engine will remain the same in 2022: that is still a blown 1.6-liter V6. In the case of Haas, that engine comes from Ferrari. However, that power source runs on E10 fuel this year.

The final design may deviate somewhat from that of the virtual car, but all in all it seems pretty definitive. In any case, it is hoped for Haas that the new regulations will turn out well: the team finished last year as the only one with 0 points. This year, the Russian Nikita Mazepin (#9) and the German Mick Schumacher (#47) will once again be behind the wheel.
