When iOS 12 was unveiled at WWDC 2018, Apple promised a public beta would be released before the end of June. Two developer betas have now appeared and now it is the turn of the public testers for the first time. With the beta, Apple can test the update with a large group of users and find bugs and other errors before the final release of the update takes place.

Of course, it’s also an excellent way to get started with all the news that iOS 12 has to offer months before the actual release. Think of new Animoji for the iPhone X, the new Screen Time that confronts you with your iPhone use and the greatly improved notifications. However, always keep in mind that these betas are not intended as a taster but as a test, so always go through the steps below before you start working with this test version.

Always make a backup first

Before getting started with installing the beta below, it’s important to always back up your iPhone or iPad first. This is a test version of iOS, which is less stable than a final release. So count on more crashes, less good battery life and other problems.

Worst case scenario, your iPhone or iPad could crash causing your data to be lost. Therefore, always make a backup so that you can easily go back to iOS 11 and you will not lose valuable data. In the tip below, we’ll show you how to make a backup.
