First quarter of 2025 fewer new engines sold

After a record year 2024, the sale of new motorcycles with 7.3% shrunk in the first quarter of 2025. With a market share of 16.7%, Kawasaki has remained the market leader for BMW and Honda. Yamaha has fallen from second to fourth place, with a contraction of 23.2%.

First quarter of 2025 fewer new engines sold

Last year was legendary in several respects. With 19,900 engines sold, the magical limit of 20,000 engines was just not passed, but it was the best sales result of this century. Even further back, more engines were sold only in 1992 and 1993.

That the first quarter of 2025 shows a small contraction compared to 2024 was therefore not strange, especially when you consider that 2024 had a very strong first quarter. What also plays a role is that from 2025 all new engines must meet Euro 5+, so that many “End of Cycle” models were put on license plate at the end of last year – (Euro 5) engines that have not yet been sold, but have already been put on the license plate.

Yet there are many remarkable differences. For example, BMW Motorrad has achieved a small growth, which can be fully reflected in the R 1300 GS/Adventure. But that is also the only model that it really does well at BMW Motorrad, in the top 25 best -selling models are only 3 BMWs, the 1300 GS and the F 900 R in just 15th place.

Triumph also has figures in the green with a growth of 13.5%, which can mainly be put on the new Tiger Sport 800 and the renewed Tiger Sport 660. At Aprilia, growth is even 17.7%, but the leader is CFMoto, which has almost seen its sale with a growth of 156.1% – from 57 units in 2024 to 146 units in 2025.

With most brands, however, a contraction can be seen compared to the first quarter of 2024. 2023 Market leader Yamaha, last year P2, has shrunk by almost a quarter (23.2%) compared to last year. Delivery problems have played Yamaha Parts, in addition, the new MT-07 has been received incredibly poorly, the new design is not appreciated-as well as the Y-Amt automatic transmission that Yamaha tries to push through.

Suzuki has even received a minus of 30.6%, but the Hamamatsu brand has no new or updated model for this year – the only news for 2025 is the DRZ400, but it is only expected in the third quarter and will certainly not be a sales topper. At Ducati, the contraction of 24.9% can also be explained logically: many of the renewed models are not yet available.

The best -selling model is the BMW R 1300 GS/Adventure, of which 387 have been sold. Strictly speaking, these are two models, the R 1300 GS and the R 1300 GS Adventure, but in the RDW data they are known as a model. But even then, even when you split them 50/50, more GSs have been sold than the number 2 Kawasaki Z650, of which 159 were sold.

Kawasaki is with 5 models in the top 10 (Z650, Z900, Versys 650, Versys 1100 and Ninja 650), followed by Yamaha with 3 (MT-09, MT-07 and Tracer 900), Suzuki with 1 (V-Strom 800) and BMW with 1.
