The popular, fully electric Ford Mustang Mach-E is now also available as an even faster, even tighter steering GT. This new version tries to make a big impression with its power of 487 hp and maximum torque of 860 Nm. But not only in that mission, the American SUV has been very successful.

What is striking about the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?
First impression: a Mustang Mach-E that is nice and ‘thick’. Yet at first sight you cannot immediately put your finger on what it owes its ‘fatness’ to. A closer look reveals that the thin black mustache on the Mach-E’s closed nose has been replaced by a large hexagonal ‘grille’ in flat honeycomb design. The bumpers hang somewhat fuller air deflectors and its 20-inch wheels are an inch larger than has been delivered from the factory until now. Still, Ford has approached the sporty handling with some restraint: the Mustang Mach-E GT isn’t like that in your face as we have come to expect from the brand’s ST and RS models.
On board, the changes are also effective, but not drastic. A strip of suede can be seen here and there, and the GT version has been given different furnishings. Ford previously shopped at Recaro for sporty seats, but that deal has now been dissolved. The ST version of the facelifted Ford Focus will also receive fairings of its own manufacture in the future. You won’t miss the Recaro seats for a minute in the Mustang Mach-E GT: the new seats wrap around your body like your favorite sweater. The GT has a very rich standard equipment. A glass panoramic roof is the only option that can be ordered at an additional cost. And you can choose your favorite color yourself. Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange are exclusive to the GT.

What’s good about the Mustang Mach-E GT?
Until now, the Mustang Mach-E AWD Extended Range with 98.7 kWh battery pack was the most powerful variant. The GT version uses the same 98.7 kWh battery, but the combined power of the two electric motors (at 351 hp) has been increased to a total of 487 hp. With a maximum torque of 860 Nm, you also have 290 newtometers (!) more at your disposal.
Even though the car weighs more than 2000 kilos, it winds itself to one hundred in just 3.7 seconds. But Ford has been a bit naughty with that statement: the measurement was carried out with a rolling start. Ford is credited for admitting that, and defending itself by stating that this is a common method of measuring the acceleration times of EVs. Seems to be doing the same for the competition. Anyway: 3.7 seconds is still a very impressive time!
Ford equips the Mustang Mach-E GT with an adaptive chassis as standard, whose dynamic properties have been taken to a higher level. And that’s a good thing, because the standard Mach-E is emphatically tuned to (American) comfort. The GT can hardly be accused of being mean. Thanks to the modifications to the chassis, it changes direction very purposefully. There is enough feeling in the steering to be able to place the two-tonner in a bend accurately to the centimeter. There is even a special circuit program on it: Untamed Plus.

What could be done better about the Mustang Mach-E GT?
The sporty adjustments to the chassis effectively nip the movements of the body in the bud, but if you go looking for extreme challenges, you still encounter some glitches. On the test route through the mountains of Croatia, where the asphalt is sometimes of lousy quality, the front and rear suspension sometimes seemed to lose harmony. We grabbed the car by the head and ass, and noticed that the head sometimes wants to dive into the feathers, while the butt shows itself motionless. Even when you use the full acceleration power, the nose seems to want to choose the airspace and the rear suspension shows itself minimally indulgent. A behavior that the car does not exhibit at lower speeds and on a better quality surface.
Ford gives a gross battery capacity of 98.7 kWh, and says that 88.0 kWh of that is usable (net capacity). Still gigantic, most competitors have a (significantly) smaller battery. The Mustang Mach-E GT has a WLTP range of 500 kilometers. Fast charging is possible with a maximum power of 150 kW, which is a decent, common value. Because the battery is so large, it takes about 45 minutes of drinking coffee to get the battery from 10 percent filling back to 80 percent. Intuitively an eternity, after half an hour our patience is exhausted. However, the longer charging time makes sense due to the large capacity of the batteries.

When will the Mustang Mach-E GT come and what will it cost?
You can now order the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. The car costs 75,490 euros. That is 7850 euros more expensive than the 351 hp variant with 98 kWh battery pack and four-wheel drive. But for that amount you get much more than just two more powerful electric motors and improved performance. For example, the standard equipment of the GT version also includes 20-inch wheels, a 10-speaker audio system from Bang & Olufsen, an adaptive damping chassis, sports seats and an even richer safety equipment. Add it all up, and the extra cost of the GT version is not that bad.

What do I think of the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT?
I was already deeply impressed by the Mustang Mach-E, and the new GT version only reinforced that feeling. With its powerful electric drive it’s a lot of fun, it steers like the best EVs and the standard equipment includes everything your pampered heart desires. Still, it’s good that Ford didn’t put an ST or RS logo on the car; This new version of the Mustang Mach-E is not so (extremely) sporty. However, it is fast indeed. Don’t worry: very fast. And very very nice.
