Five occasions for the do-it-yourselfer

Roll up your sleeves and get to work!

Five occasions for the do-it-yourselfer

The prices of used cars have risen sharply in recent times. This applies once again to classics, some models have become downright unreachable for most people. Fortunately, if you’re a bit handy, you can still get nice projects for relatively little money. On our occasion platform we found five cars that need some love and attention.

Citroen CX (1975) – €950

Five occasions for the do-it-yourselfer

Only a few copies of the Citroën CX are for sale today. If you do find them, you often lose at least 8 grand. With its asking price of €950, this CX is a lot cheaper, but of course there is still a lot to be done. Apart from a few crispy edges, the red body still looks reasonably okay, unfortunately the hardness of the bottom cannot be judged based on the photos. Given the asking price, we fear the worst in that regard. The left rear window is also missing, so as a handyman you will still have to follow it. The interior seems a bit worse than the outside, especially the driver’s seat could use a facelift. Who will restore this CX to its former glory?

Volvo 262 Coupe (1980) – €2,500

Do it yourself occasions

It is slightly more expensive (in terms of purchase at least) with this Volvo 262 Coupé designed by Bertone. According to the seller, he has 311,000 kilometers on the clock and that is certainly visible in the condition of the 42-year-old Swede. The front left headlight is missing and the rust devil has already struck in a number of places. There is a lot of rust, especially behind the rear window. Also, the paint no longer seems to be in the best condition. In the interior, the beige furniture in the front still looks remarkably good, but under the dashboard is a whole mess of wiring open. The condition of the engine is unknown. The 2.7 six-cylinder also likes LPG.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 (1991) – €8,250

Do it yourself occasions

Unfortunately, this is not the 300 SL, but the SL of generation R129. This copy is from 1991 and has been on Dutch registration since 2001. From 2002 to 2011, the SL was in the possession of a private owner, but it has now been in the hands of a car company for eleven years. In the pictures it doesn’t even look that bad, just the Mercedes star in the grille needs some attention. R129 SL’s are increasing in value, so it might pay to refurbish this car. Unfortunately, the seller does not mention the state of the technology, so it is not inconceivable that there are still some caveats. He probably won’t be with a company that long for nothing.

Porsche 928 (1979) – €9.950

Do it yourself occasions

Not very long ago you could buy a neat Porsche 928 for 10 grand. That was one thing, but that does not mean that you have no chance with that budget. This 1979 manual 928 4.5 is for sale for just under 10 grand and is still ‘hard’ according to the seller. However, he could use a lick of paint, because the dark brown paint is already peeling off nicely. Inside the 928, the dashboard is somewhat discolored, but the leather on the seats still looks fine. We don’t see any crazy things in the engine compartment in the photos, although that does not necessarily mean that there are no problems.

Ford Mustang Fastback (1965) – €24,950

Do it yourself occasions

Almost 25 grand for a car that looks pretty rotten at first glance. That’s a lot of money, isn’t it? The Mustang Fastback from the 60s has become an iconic classic and especially if they still have the original engine, they are worth a lot of money. This car still has its original ‘A-code’ 4.7 V8, which on paper produces 225 hp. To restore this car to its former glory, you will probably lose its purchase price again. In the interior photos you can see through the floor of the car to the ground, so renewing the bottom probably takes most of the work. Also from the outside the body doesn’t look too good and in the interior it looks like someone has draped the carpet from his living room over the center console. If you’re willing to put in the necessary blood, sweat and tears, you’ve got a fantastic classic in your driveway.
