Those who take part in the “Fizz Free February” will not drink any sugary drinks for the whole of February. For many this is likely to be a big change – one that is good for their health.
The basic idea of the Fizz Free February: If you manage to go without sweet drinks for a whole month, it will be much easier for the rest of the year.
Many people ingest a huge amount of sugar through beverages like soda. In the case of 11 to 18 year olds, they even make up 29 percent of their daily sugar consumption. The high amount of sugar is dangerous for health.
The action was launched by the district council of Southwark (a borough of London). It is particularly aimed at students. But a month without sugary drinks is not only useful for students.
Fizz Free February: Reasons to Join
There are several sensible arguments for avoiding or drinking less sugary drinks:
- No sugar made easy: Many foods have too much sugar; most of us consume far too much sugar anyway. If you stop drinking sugary drinks, it is relatively easy to reduce your sugar consumption significantly.
- The financial aspect: You save real money. Ready-made sodas, iced tea, cola and Co. cost more than if you make (sugar-free) drinks yourself or drink tap water.
- Healthy teeth: Especially with minors, lemonades and other sugary drinks are the biggest cause of tooth decay. But even in adults, sugary drinks increase the risk significantly.
Here’s how you can join the Fizz Free February
It’s simple: don’t drink sugary drinks in February. You can also run the Fizz Free February as a larger action or campaign:
- Try to win friends and acquaintances for Fizz Free February.
- If you have school-age children: convince teachers to take the action as a class. The same applies to sports clubs. There are also posters available for download online that will fit nicely in a classroom. The children can motivate each other in this way. In addition, a month without sugary drinks is particularly useful at this age.
After Dry January Fizz Free February is the next great opportunity to do something for your health.
