Flanders bans the sale of new fuel cars by 2029

As of 2029, no new cars with a combustion engine may be sold in Flanders. From that year on, only the sale of electrically powered models is allowed.

The government of Flanders announces the hard deadline. The sale of new hybrid cars will also be banned from 2029. There are some conditions attached to the ban, because combustion engines will only be banned if electric cars are cheaper to purchase at that time. There must also be an adequate supply of cars and batteries and there must be sufficient charging infrastructure available.

There will be no ban on the sale of used cars with combustion engines and used hybrids. Such a ban does not exist anywhere in Europe and the second-hand market follows that of new cars, is the reasoning of the Flemish government. Initially, it was proposed to ban the sale of new cars with a combustion engine in Flanders from 2027. Three years later, in 2030, second-hand cars should no longer be sold. However, Flemish politicians had reservations about the feasibility of this date.

With this deadline, Flanders is ahead of the EU deadline for the fuel engine in new cars. The European Union wants a ban on new fuel cars by 2035. France and Germany are against this. It goes without saying that these countries are home to a lot of car industry. People fear job losses due to the switch to electric driving.
