Flashback: ‘Ferrari never comes with a four-door’

Ferrari was very sure exactly ten years ago: there would never be a four-door Ferrari. The Italians have kept their word to date, but not all promises have been fulfilled.

It is swearing in church to talk about a four-door Ferrari, as Ferrari chief Amedeo Felisa emphasized today exactly ten years ago. “Enzo Ferrari has always said that it never wants to build a four-door car. And of course we respect our heritage. If you want a four-door Ferrari, you can go to Maserati,” said the Italian at the time. Although Felisa has not held sway at Ferrari for years, his departure has not led to a different vision. A four-door Ferrari is still nothing more than a dream, nightmare, or the creation of a creative body builder.

Still, it remains an exciting question: will it ever happen? Although Ferrari knows better than anyone that it cannot mess with heritage, it has already returned to a very firm statement. In late 2014, then-Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne was very clear: “There will be no four-door or SUV from Ferrari.” We now know of course that the SUV is indeed in the pipeline. That was completely unthinkable for years, but it will really come sometime in the coming years. If that is also a four-door … Yet it seems that Ferrari even clings to the two doors with the SUV.

Incidentally, Ferrari has ever shown a preview of a four-door model. The Pininfarina design house was responsible for the special design of the 1980 Ferrari Pinin. The 400GT-related sedan was designed to celebrate Pininfarina’s 50th anniversary and was also discussed with none other than Enzo Ferrari. Reportedly, it was then thought to make a production version of the four-door, but that never happened. The big man would have liked it and even enthusiastic about the design at the time, but the high men at Ferrari owner Fiat did not like it. So you may wonder to what extent a four-door Ferrari really goes against the spirit of Enzo Ferrari.
