‘Foldable Google Pixel coming in 2022, with a small disappointment’

'Foldable Google Pixel coming in 2022, with a small disappointment'

The rumors about the existence of a foldable Pixel phone from Google have been around for a while. We were hoping to see the foldables at the launch of the Pixel 6 phones, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Now reports are coming out that Google will announce the foldable Pixel next year. There is one but…

Launch of the foldable Pixel phone

The foldable Pixel phone is ready for launch in 2022, reports 9to5Google. The device will unfortunately not use the same high-end camera sensors as those of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, according to this source. With this, Google would use the same strategy as Samsung. Samsung has also not chosen the best cameras for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3.

Outdated cameras

This post is based on a piece of code in the latest version of the Google Camera app. That code contains clues to a collapsible Pixel codenamed ‘Pipit’, which, incidentally, does not match these codenames. If the clues in the code are correct, the Google Pixel ‘Fold’ will have the same cameras as last year’s Pixel 5 phones, instead of the new larger sensor in the main cameras of the Pixel 6 series. That will be the same 12.2 MP camera (Sony IMX363) that Google has been using since the Pixel 3.

Of course, using these outdated cameras doesn’t mean they’re bad cameras. Google has for some time made up for the lack of impressive camera hardware with very impressive software. Remember when they managed to mimic portrait mode with just a single camera lens? And let’s not forget that Google’s Night Vision feature certainly helped set a standard for low-light photography. We’ll have to wait until 2022 to see if these rumors come true, so for now we’ll take it with a grain of salt.
