The new iPhones take better photos than ever thanks to Smart HDR, but how exactly does this work and how do you turn it on? Here’s what you need to know about the new camera technology.
Smart HDR: that’s how it works
The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR have Smart HDR in addition to a fast A12 chip and more secure Face ID camera. So far we hear little about this camera technique, while you will probably use the function on a daily basis.
In short, Smart HDR ensures that your photos become more beautiful, without you having to think about it. The colors are automatically adjusted afterwards. Especially photos with many contrasts, such as a sunset with a person in front of it, are improved thanks to the new technology.
When we zoom in a little further on Smart HDR, it appears that the technology is very ingenious. The process to take better pictures naturally starts with the camera. As soon as you take a photo, several images are shot in between, which focus on different parts of the composition. For example, one photo focuses on your face, while another image focuses on the light.
All this takes place in a flash of a second so that you don’t realize it. Afterwards, all these snapshots are added together so that you get one optimized photo. For the best result, the A12 processor also works.
This chip has artificial intelligence (AI). This ensures that the camera keeps getting smarter and learning continuously. In other words, the more photos you take, the better they eventually get. The processor learns to recognize photos and knows, for example, which part is underexposed. He automatically increases the brightness here.

Smart HDR is automatically applied when you have the HDR function turned on in the Camera app. Point your lens at what you want to photograph and take the photo – your iPhone does all the heavy lifting.
