Ford enters into a strategic partnership with Google. The main goal is to extensively implement technology that allows cars to exchange information with each other and with Ford itself. In addition, Android will become the infotainment system in Ford cars by 2023.
Major car manufacturers and tech giants are increasingly finding each other when it comes to technologies that make driving ‘smarter’. For example, GM recently announced a partnership with Microsoft, and Geely is partnering with Tencent. Now Ford is joining that list and not with the least party: Google. Ford and Google enter into a six-year partnership, which will be fleshed out under the name ‘Team Upshift’. In an online presentation for international media including Techzle, Ford and Google revealed the first details.
Google Cloud
First of all, the partnership means that Fords will use Google Cloud for data sharing with Ford itself, but also for cars among themselves. The partnership is likely to benefit Ford’s development of both connected and self-driving cars. Using things like Google Maps and Google Cloud will undoubtedly make developing autonomous technology easier. Ford has its own Autonomous Vehicle division and Waymo has been working on this for years under the wing of Google. So there is already the necessary expertise in this field on both sides. Now you can take a look at each other in the kitchen.
As mentioned, data will also be exchanged between the cars and Ford via Google Cloud, on the basis of which the manufacturer can, for example, assist with maintenance advice and the like. Recommendations for Ford owners from the manufacturer come to the car via Cloud, but the other way around it also helps Ford to streamline its services. This includes scheduling an appointment with a dealer and ordering parts. Google declares that this data will not end up with third parties.
Android
Another aspect that has already been discussed is that Android will be the operating system in new cars from Ford and Lincoln, starting in 2023. Until then, Ford’s own SYNC will continue in development. As of 2023, the implementation of Android, for example Google Maps, will become the navigation system and communication with the car will be via Google Assistant. In addition, as usual with Android, you can install other apps in your car via Google Play. The system will come to all Ford models and will be a variant of Android Automotive developed specifically for Ford.
