Ford CEO expects EV to remain more expensive than gasoline car for a long time to come

Not everyone is optimistic about the affordability of electric cars in the near future. Ford CEO Jim Farley offers a relatively pessimistic outlook.

The acceptance of electric cars largely depends on the cost. Many people still find electric cars too expensive to purchase and EVs are also more expensive than their fuel equivalents. According to the most optimistic estimates, this will change in a few years. Volvo CEO Jim Rowan stated at the end of last year that he counts on 2025 as the year in which the turnaround takes place. An analysis by BloombergNEF showed a year earlier that this will probably not happen until 2027. Jim Farley, Ford’s chief executive, thinks it may take a little longer.

Farley expects according to Reuters that it may not be until after 2030. So even after Ford itself has already switched to a fully electric range here in Europe. The American is counting on significant cost reductions between 2030 and 2035. Then, according to him, production costs will fall on many fronts; EVs will consist of fewer parts and will have smaller batteries with even cheaper raw materials. Farley also expects a lot from direct sales of cars to reduce costs.
