Ford expects to avoid a European CO2 fine

The European Union imposes hefty fines on car manufacturers who do not meet the sharply tightened CO2 standards next year. Ford seemed to be one of them, but the brand looks forward to it with confidence.

According to the stricter EU rules, brands may only emit 96.6 grams of CO2 per kilometer on average per 2021. PA Consulting recently calculated the current state of affairs and how this translates into possible fines in 2021. Ford was also mentioned as one of the more severely punished brands. The CO2 emissions of its fleet would be good for a fine of no less than € 1.46 billion, unless rapid progress was made.

Ford seems to assume the latter. According to Automotive News, Joe Hinrichs, the president of Ford Automotive Global, says it will be alright. “We do not expect to receive fines, to cooperate with others or to pay lump sum payments,” says Hinrichs. He points out that the introduction of electrification of 14 models should already reduce CO2 emissions considerably this year. The first Ford, fully developed as an EV, the Mustang Mach E, must of course make a big contribution.
