Ford brought the Focus to the operating table late last year for a touch-up session. The compact middle class was given a new front and became a bit more expensive. Does that also provide a richer standard equipment? Time to check out the flag for the base model of the revised Focus.
Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost 100 hp Connected
€28,240
The 1.0 EcoBoost with 100 hp, together with the 280 hp ST-X, is the only petrol engine without electric support on the price list of the renewed Ford Focus. With mild-hybrid assistance, the same powerplant is available with 125 or 155 hp. The 100 hp variant without mild-hybrid support costs only €1,110 less than the 125 hp mild-hybrid power station. The latter can also be ordered in several versions, where that is not possible with the 100 hp. In that case you will have to make do with the ‘Connected’. There are also two diesel engines on the price list of the Focus, but for a self-igniter you have to tap at least €32,040. At this time, it is a plausible idea that those diesels are not going to do very well in sales.
firefighter red
Ford does not supply the Focus as a basic version in an average color. ‘Race Red’ is the only color that you can get without extra payment, for the other 7 colors you have to spend a minimum of €400 and a maximum of €1,250. The Focus rolls on 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. It can also be recognized by a grille with horizontal and vertical bars, framed with a chrome-plated edge. LED lighting is always hidden behind the tightly drawn headlights of the Focus, although the light units on the entry-level model are not adaptive. They do have cornering lights that work through the integrated fog lamps in the headlights. Ford does not use LED technology for the rear lights of the basic Focus. A light sensor is included.
When parking, the Focus helps you with parking sensors all around. Furthermore, the side mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated. The Focus must be unlocked by hand as standard, but you do get a programmable ‘MyKey’ from Ford. Allows you to set a speed limit or limit the volume of the radio. Handy if you give your car to someone. If you want to blind the rear windows even more, it costs €250. If desired, Ford can supply a detachable towbar for €900.
More of the same
In the interior of the basic model of the renewed Focus, it is first of all striking that everything has remained reasonably the same. For example, in front of you are two analog counters with a screen for the on-board computer in between. Things really change with the 13.2-inch touchscreen that comes with the Sync 4 infotainment system. However, the Connected has to make do with an 8-inch touchscreen that runs on Sync 2.5. Smartphone connectivity and an audio system with six speakers are included. Incidentally, it is striking that the basic version of the pre-facelift Focus had a smaller touchscreen, but ran on Sync 3. For €375 you can upgrade Sync 2.5 to Sync 3.2, which you can use to navigate.
You sit in the Focus Connected on fabric sports seats that are height-adjustable for both the driver and passenger and offer lumbar support. The steering wheel is covered with Sensico synthetic leather. You have to ensure that the temperature in the car remains comfortable, because the air conditioning is manually operated. Furthermore, unlike the previous base model, the Focus always has cruise control and an autonomous emergency braking system that can actively intervene in the event of an imminent collision. If the standard equipment is not sufficient, Ford will provide the ‘Driver Assistance Pack’ (including adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning and high beam assistant) and the ‘Comfort Pack’ (including automatic air conditioning, keyless go and rain sensor) for €750. If you would like to keep warm in the winter, the ‘Winter Pack’ with heated seats and steering wheel and a heated windscreen for €475 might be an idea.
The Focus has also become quite a bit more expensive in the past five years. In 2018, the Trend Edition, which, although lacking the LED headlights, cruise control and parking sensors, still cost €23,765. That’s a difference of $4,475. Incidentally, the Trend Edition later disappeared from the price list and the Trend Edition Business took that place. That version had standard navigation, cruise control, parking sensors and electrically folding side mirrors on board. The Trend Edition Business was last listed for €26,985, €1,255 cheaper than the Connected. As Connected, the Focus is not extremely sparse, but there is certainly still something to be desired.
