Ford is going to invest 300 million dollars, converted 248.5 million euros, in its Romanian factory. The investment will benefit the production of a new electric delivery van. Ford will leave it in the middle about what model this is exactly.
With the investment in the Romanian factory in Craiova, Ford will soon be able to produce fully electric models in three locations in Europe. The Romanian factory follows the Ford Cologne Electrified Vehicle Center in Germany and the Ford Otosan Kocaeli factory in Turkey, where the brand is currently screwing the Transit together. Ford wants to use this investment to increase production capacity for light commercial vehicles. The car manufacturer also indicates that it wants to accelerate efforts to offer emission-free company cars in Europe. By 2030, Ford expects two-thirds of vans sold to have a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.
From 2023, Ford will start building delivery vans in Romania, production of the electric variant will start in 2024. The exact start date will be announced at a later date. Ford is still keeping an eye on which model it is, but the new Transit Custom, which is planned for 2023, will probably also roll off the production line in Romania in addition to Turkey. It is also possible that this is the new generation of the Transit Connect, but Ford has not released anything about that. Ford is currently building the European version of the Transit, the largest variant of the van series, in Turkey. This is also where the electric variant will come from, which will appear on the market in the spring of 2022. In Craiova, Ford currently produces the EcoSport and the Puma.
