Ford is working with a British consortium on the so-called ‘RoadSafe’. That should warn Ford drivers about dangerous places.
If you want to know where the risk of an accident is high, you are now mainly dependent on reports from the media or stories from others. That can be done smarter, they think at Ford. That is why the manufacturer is working with a number of British companies on a system that maps out how much danger there is for road users in different places.
RoadSafe is a collection point for various data. For example, based on vehicle data (for example, abrupt braking or steering movements), sensors along roads and reports about accidents, an algorithm measures the probability of an accident per location. This is then literally mapped with different colors that indicate how great the danger is.
In practice, this may eventually become visible in the navigation system. You can also think of an optional sound signal or a visual warning if you are approaching a dangerous point. The system is now being field tested with 200 vehicles across London and Oxfordshire.
