Ford Mondeo will disappear in March 2022

It is well known that the Ford Mondeo will soon disappear in its current form. Now we also know when exactly that should be done. At the same time, Ford is opening a book about what we can expect from the brand in the coming years.

The Ford Mondeo will be discontinued in March 2022. That is smooth, but it also means that you can turn to Ford for at least another year for a hefty middle class. Earlier we saw that that can be quite smart, because in the best tradition, Ford will fill the 2014 model with extras for a reasonable amount towards the end of its career.

Everything EV or PHEV in 2026

Moreover, a modern Mondeo in our country is always a Hybrid and in that respect at least up to date. Just like almost every other brand, Ford will be strongly committed to electrification in the coming years, so the share of hybrids must increase in the coming years. By mid-2026 everything should be ‘Zero-emmision capable’, as Ford nicely calls it. That means that all cars that Ford sells must be able to pass through traffic at least temporarily without emissions. In concrete terms: all European Fords are plug-in hybrids or EVs. In 2030, the transition will be complete and all Fords sold in Europe must be fully electric. Incidentally, Ford is already doing good business with its plug-ins: no less than half of the Kugas sold are PHEVs.

The disappearance of the Mondeo has everything to do with the popularity of SUVs. In 2020, 39 percent of European Ford buyers chose an SUV or a crossover, 8 percentage points more than in 2019.

Galaxy and S-Max

Anyone who sees the Mondeo disappear, might think that the technically related MPVs Galaxy and S-Max should also leave the field. Given the almost complete loss of the MPV segment, that seems a logical move, but Ford is not yet venturing to an end date for the space giants that have recently been presented in hybrid form. It makes no difference to the Netherlands: both models have been discontinued here since 2018.

Mondeo successor

The end of the Mondeo ‘as we know it’ does not mean that this model will not get a successor. We already got a hefty Ford for the lens that would fit nicely in this hole. In addition to a different body shape, a different model name is most likely waiting for this car.
