Ford shifts focus
Bigger changes are about to happen at Ford, at least for Europe. The brand would like to focus less on smaller, European models, and instead build on the American background. After the Fiesta, the Focus will also reportedly disappear.
If we are to believe the German Automobilwoche, Ford is reinventing itself. Ford has been a specialty in the car world for many years. After all, it is originally American, but in Europe you generally do not see anything of that. The models that are used here have in recent decades been developed for and by Europeans and in Europe, more specifically in Germany.
However, it looks like this is about to change. That is not shocking news, because the current Ford Mustang Mach-E is already an excellent example of this. Ford’s first electric SUV takes its name and some appearances from Ford’s greatest American icon and is nevertheless a true world car, which is also successfully marketed in Europe.
If we read carefully between the lines at Automobilwoche, that is in fact what should happen with Ford as a brand. The models are becoming more global and Ford will build more and more on its American ‘roots’ in its marketing communications and in practice. This does not always mean that models are sold in both the US and Europe, but that we will increasingly recognize the European Ford and the American Ford as one company.
Freedom and adventure: the Ford Bronco
This also includes a certain amount of adventure, a desire for freedom and adventure. Think more tough SUVs, pick-ups and off-road vehicles. And less affordable models, as the disappearance of the Fiesta has already made clear. After Ford’s B-segmenter, it is reportedly the turn of the C-segment in 2025, when production of the Focus ends. Instead, we are presented with a number of electric models, which will rest on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
