Ford expects to triple annual production of the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E between now and 2023, the brand’s CEO said.
More than 200,000 Mustang Mach-Es are to be built annually for the North American and European markets from 2023, Farley said on Twitter. That’s three times the amount coming off the line this year. That’s important news, because the Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s first serious EV and for the time being one of the few.
Farley has good reason to believe that Ford can actually sell that amount, because, like many brands, Americans struggle with shortages. “It is difficult to meet the demand for the Mustang Mach-E,” he said in the same tweet. If it becomes easier to get chips, in particular, production can be significantly increased from 2022.
Earlier it became clear that Ford is aiming for a total EV production of 600,000 per year before 2023. The Mustang Mach-E apparently accounts for one third. An equally important EV is the Ford F-150 Lightning, the electric version of the pick-up that has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for years. Then there is the electric e-Transit. Expansion of the electric range is of course planned, but there may be some delay due to production problems. Ford is instead focusing on getting Mustang Mach-E production up to scratch, Reuters reports.
